About Us
About IWMC
Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) is a provincial crown corporation responsible for operating a cost effective and environmentally responsible waste management system on Prince Edward Island.
For more than 20 years, our made-in-PEI sorting program, Waste Watch, has required residents, businesses, and visitors to separate the waste we produce.
Our Vision
To be the Canadian leader in public sector solid waste management.
Our Mission
To manage solid waste in a financially responsible manner that protects the environment, is constantly improving, and enjoys broad public participation.
Together, we have diverted over 1.3 million tonnes of material from our landfill over the past two decades.
Our History
Sorting in PEI dates to the early 1990s when local, municipal, and provincial officials were tasked with finding a new site to replace a local landfill that was nearing capacity.
The committee recognized the importance of rethinking waste management to protect our environment and groundwater for the health, safety, and enjoyment of future generations.
In 1992, a pilot project launched with a small number of households and businesses in East Prince for the Waste Watch Program. By 1994, the East Prince Waste Management Commission implemented the program to all East Prince.
1994 also saw the East Prince Waste Management Facility constructed in Wellington Centre with enhanced environmental measures and controls allowing for safe and responsible disposal of waste.
In 1999, Island Waste Management Corporation was established and by 2002, the Waste Watch Program was extended Island-wide, leading to the closure of all remaining community dumps in the province.
Decades later, Prince Edward Island continues to be a Canadian leader in waste management. Responsible disposal practices, innovative partnerships, and stewardship programs are diverting thousands of tonnes of organics, recyclable materials, and hazardous waste from our only active landfill each year.
